Madrassas (Islamic institutions) have been using retrieval practices for over millennia.

I never really ever thought about this until I started teaching. I used to think there was no sense behind Madressa and we just prayed and prayed until we knew the Quran.

For centuries, Madressas have mastered a teaching method that modern cognitive science is only now catching up with. As a teacher who has walked the path of a Haafidh, I now see the parallels firsthand.

When you are becoming a Haafidh, there are three things you need to pray to your teacher every day.

↔ Sabak - Anything new you have learnt

↔ Sabak Dohr - Anything new you have learnt, plus what you have learnt over the past few days

↔ Dohr - Anything you have learnt ranging from when you started, covering the entire Quran.

This method isn’t just about spiritual discipline—it’s a strategic approach to learning that’s as relevant in today’s classrooms as it was a millennium ago.
